George C. Baker

George C. Baker ( born 1951 in Dallas, Texas) is an American organist, composer, music teacher and dermatologist.

Biography

Baker received a four- year-old piano lessons. At age 10 he began his organ studies with Phil Baker, organist at the Highland Park Methodist Church in Dallas, Texas (USA). This was followed by an organ studies with Robert T. Anderson at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas (USA ), which he finished in 1973 with a Bachelor 's Degree. In 1969 he won the Regional Competition, a year later, the National Organ Competition of the American Guild of Organists (AGO ) in Fort Wayne, the youngest winners in the history of this organ competition.

It joined in organ studies in France with Marie- Claire Alain, André Marchal, Pierre and Jean Langlais Cochereau. In 1974 he won the Grand Prix de Chartres in organ interpretation. He received his doctorate in music from the University of Michigan and taught at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC In 1979 he won the first prize at the International Organ Improvisation Competition in Lyon, France. His recordings include the complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach (the first of an American organist ), Louis Vierne (together with Pierre Cochereau ) as well as the world premiere recording of the complete organ works by Darius Milhaud, who was awarded two Grand Prix du Disque.

In addition to his musical career, Baker studied until 1987 medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and since 1991 works as a dermatologist in Dallas. After two years of study at the Cox School of Business, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, he received in 1998 a Masters Degree in Business Administration ( MBA). During this time he worked as an Adjunct Professor of artistic organ playing and improvisation at Southern Methodist University and also as a dermatologist at the SMU Health Center.

Baker is an internationally renowned concert organist and competition juror. He is currently Associate University Organist at Perkins Chapel Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
