George Denison

George Denison ( born February 22, 1790 in Kingston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, † August 20, 1831 in Wilkes -Barre, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1819 and 1823 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

After leaving school at the Wilkes-Barre Academy George Denison worked in retail. Between 1811 and 1814, he was employed as a clerk in the administration of the Municipal Council of Wilkes - Barre. After many years he was himself a member of that body. In the years 1823 and 1824, he served as its president. From 1812 to 1815 he worked in the administration of Luzerne County (Recorder and Registrar). After studying law and his 1813 was admitted to the bar he began to work in Luzerne County in this profession. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic- Republican Party. In the years 1815 and 1816 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania.

In the congressional elections of 1818 Denison was in the tenth constituency of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of William Wilson on March 4, 1819. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1823 two legislative sessions. Since 1821 he was chairman of the committee responsible for supervising the expenditure of the Post Ministry. In 1822 he gave up another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives George Denison again practiced as a lawyer. In 1824 he was also deputy prosecutor in Luzerne County; in 1827 he was again a deputy in the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. This mandate he held until his death. He died on August 20, 1831 in Wilkes -Barre, where he was also buried. His nephew Charles Denison (1818-1867) was also a congressman.
