George Dollond

George Dollond (* January 25, 1774 in London, † May 13, 1852 ) was a British optician and telescope designer of the by John Dollond ( 1706-1761 ), his great-uncle, founded Opticians dynasty.

He built astronomical telescopes and developed various precision instruments for geodesy and navigation. In 1821 he constructed a micrometer based on natural crystals, and in 1830 together with Peter Barlow an afocal system to extend the focal length telescopes, the so-called Barlow lens.

He worked most of his life in the family of musical instruments, which had built his uncle Peter Dollond and his father John Dollond. The companies he headed from 1819, when his uncle retired from business.

The company Dollond was in the decades after 1760 a world leader in the production of achromatic lenses, which revolutionized by their color purity the Fernrohrbau.
