George Don

Don George ( born May 17, 1798 in Doo Hillock, Forfarshire, † February 25, 1856 in Kensington, London) was a Scottish botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " G.Don ".

Life and work

His eponymous father George Don (1764-1814) was in 1802, " superintendent " of the Botanical Garden of Edinburgh.

Don George was the brother of the more famous botanist David Don. In 1816 he was superintendent of the gardens at Chelsea, London (Chelsea Physic Garden ). In 1821 he traveled to the Royal Horticultural Society (London ) to Brazil, the West Indies and Sierra Leone to collect plants. Most of his discovered plants were published by Joseph Sabine; some new species from Sierra Leone Don has also firstdescribed itself.

Don's major work is a four-volume, 1813 to 1838 published book, which was published under the two tracks A general history of the dichlamydeous plants ... and A General System of Gardening and Botany. He was also the auditor of the first supplementary volume of the Encyclopaedia of Plants by John Claudius Loudon; he also wrote a monograph on the genus Allium.
