George Duke

George Duke ( born January 12, 1946 in San Rafael, California; † August 5, 2013 in Los Angeles ) was an American musician ( keyboard player, singer, arranger ) and producer of the jazz-fusion.

Life

During his bachelor studies (trombone, composition, double bass), he played with Al Jarreau in the house band at the Half Note Club in San Francisco, the guest soloists such as Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon Letta Mbulu or accompanied. In 1967 he completed his composition studies at the San Francisco State University. During this time he led a trio with which he accompanied the vocal group Third Wave or soloists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Bobby Hutcherson and Jean -Luc Ponty and 1969 occurred at the Newport Jazz Festival. In 1970 he was a member of the Mothers of Invention by Frank Zappa and keyboards on this album Ponty King Kong: Jean -Luc Ponty Plays the Music of Frank Zappa worked. 1971 and 1972 brought him Cannonball Adderley in his quintet in which he worked on some LPs. From 1973 he played until 1975 ( with brief interruptions ) again with Frank Zappa; in addition, he played a few albums for the MPS. Then he led together with Billy Cobham, a fusion band. He also worked with Stanley Clarke in the disco business.

He worked as a record producer since the second half of the 1970s. His entry as a producer he had. Produced with the 1977 album Sweet Lucy by Raul de Souza, in which he plays keyboards in three pieces under the pseudonym Dawilli Gonga Among others, he worked for his cousin Dianne Reeves, the fusion drummer Billy Cobham and the singer Al Jarreau. Since 2004, he ran his own record label "BPM Records ". BPM stands for " Big Piano Music ". As musical influences Dukes are particularly Miles Davis and the soul-jazz sound of Les McCann and Cal Tjader mentioned. Duke was also strongly influenced by funk and soul music.

In 2004, he wrote the soundtrack to Ernest R. Dickerson's crime movie Never Die Alone.
