George E. Shipley

George Edward Shipley (* April 21, 1927 in Olney, Illinois, † June 28, 2003 ) was an American politician. Between 1959 and 1979 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

George Shipley attended the East Richland High School and thereafter until 1950, the Olney High School. His schooling was interrupted by his military service in the United States Marine Corps, where he served in the years 1944 until 1947. Between 1950 and 1954 he was employed as Chief Deputy Sheriff with the police in Richland County; 1954 to 1958 he was sheriff there. After that he worked as a private entrepreneur. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career.

In the congressional elections of 1958, Shipley was the 23rd electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Charles W. Vursell on January 3, 1959. After nine elections he could pass in Congress until January 3, 1979 ten legislative periods. Since 1973 he represented there as a follower of William L. Springer the 22th district of his state. During his time in Congress were, among others, the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement and in 1974, the Watergate affair.

1978 renounced George Shipley on another candidacy. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, he is no longer politically have appeared. He died on 28 June 2003 in Olney.
