George E. Smith

George Elwood Smith ( born May 10, 1930 in White Plains ) is an American physicist. It is co-inventor of the charge-coupled device (CCD).

Smith worked from 1959 to 1986 at Bell Laboratories, where he promoted the exploration of novel lasers and semiconductor devices.

In 1969, Smith and Willard Boyle invented the charge-coupled device (CCD). For this, both received in 1973, the Franklin Institute Stuart Ballantine Medal.

It was in 2009, awarded along with Willard Boyle, awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention of the CCD.

George E. Smith is a radio amateur and holds the U.S. callsign AA2EJ.
