George E. Spencer

George Eliphaz Spencer ( born 1 November 1836 in Champion, Jefferson County, New York, † February 19, 1893 in Washington DC ) was an American politician of the Republican Party, who represented the state of Alabama in the U.S. Senate.

A native of the State of New York Spencer attended college in Montreal, Canada and was on his return to the United States in 1856, first employment as a secretary of the Senate of Iowa. After law studies, he was then taken to the bar in 1857 and began to work in his new profession.

During the Civil War Spencer served with the rank of Captain in the Union Army. After his retirement from the military in 1865, he was raised later for his exemplary behavior on the battlefield to the rank of brigadier general. He worked in the first episode again as a lawyer in Decatur, before he entered government service in 1867 and civil servant for bankruptcy cases (register in bankruptcy ) for the fourth district of the State of Alabama was.

After the resumption of Alabama in the United States in 1868, the Republican Spencer was elected to the U.S. Senate. 1872 was followed by the confirmation in office, so he remained until March 3, 1879 Congress. During this time he was chairman of the Committee on the District of Columbia and the Committee on Military Affairs. In 1872, he also served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention and as a member of the Republican National Committee.

George Spencer then retired to his ranch in Nevada and died in 1893 during a stay in the capital. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
