George Goldthwaite

George Goldthwaite ( born December 10, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts, † March 16, 1879 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama) was an American lawyer and politician (Democratic Party), who represented the state of Alabama in the U.S. Senate.

George Goldthwaite studied post-school from 1823 to 1826 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He then moved to Alabama, studied law and was admitted in the same year to the bar, after which he began practicing in Pike County.

From 1843 to 1852 he served as a judge at the district court, then until 1856 as an assistant judge of the Alabama Supreme Court this year, he was appointed chief judge, but he put these items quickly down again and again worked as a practicing attorney. During the Civil War Goldthwaite served as commanding officer ( Adjutant General ) of the Konföderiertentruppen in Alabama.

In 1868 he was again elected judge of the district court, but the exercise of this post was not allowed. As of March 4, 1871 George Goldthwaite represented his state finally in the U.S. Senate, from which he retired after one term on March 3, 1877. He did not applied for re-election and retired into private life.
