George Graham (clockmaker)

George Graham ( * July 7, 1673 in Horsgill in the parish of Kirklinton, Cumberland, England; † November 16, 1751 in London ) was an English watchmaker, on the back a number of important developments.

Life

His father was also named George Graham. After seven years of apprenticeship with Henry Aske in London Graham worked from 1695 with Thomas Tompion, the " father of English watchmaking ", with whom he had a friendship until his death in 1713. Graham became a partner Tompions and married his niece Elizabeth. 1695 joined the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and in 1722 was appointed master. Graham died on November 16, 1751 at his home in Fleet Street in London. He was buried in the grave of Tompion in Westminster Abbey.

In 1721 he was inducted as a member ( "Fellow" ) to the Royal Society.

Graham had an aversion to banks and hoarded his money in a safe way. He gave large sums of money to friends without charging interest; one of the so grantees was an instrument maker James Harrison.
