George Gustavus, Count Palatine of Veldenz

Georg Gustav von Pfalz- Veldenz ( born February 6, 1564 on the castle of Remigius, † June 3, 1634 ) was from 1592 to 1634, Count Palatine of Veldenz.

Life

Georg Gustav was the eldest son of the Count Palatine Johann Georg I of Veldenz (1543-1592) from his marriage to Anna Maria (1545-1610), daughter of King Gustav I Vasa of Sweden. Georg Gustav studied at the University of Tübingen.

Georg Gustav took over from his father a completely bankrupt state he 1592 also shared with his brothers. Georg Gustav kept Veldenz and Lauterecken, his brother Johann August received Luetzelstein, and Louis-Philippe and George John II jointly received Guttenberg, the latter took over Luetzelstein after the death of his brother. Georg Gustav was like his father, a Lutheran, but only Georg Gustav signed the Formula of Concord.

Beginning of the 17th century designed Georg Gustav the Benedictine priory Lixheim to Exulant order, which was to a settlement of Protestant religious refugees. In 1600 Georg Gustav joined with the Duchy of Zweibrücken a comparison in consequence of its share in Alsenz was ceded to the Zweibrücker.

In the Thirty Years' War Georg Gustav was expelled by Spanish troops from his country which was taken by Archbishop Philipp Christoph von Trier in possession. Only Georg Gustav's son received the land in the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia back.

Georg Gustav was buried in the Remigiusberg like his mother, his second wife and the eponymous daughter Maria Elisabetha in the Parish Church of St. Remigius.

Marriages and descendants

Georg Gustav married his first marriage on 31 May 1586 Stuttgart Elisabeth ( 1548-1592 ), daughter of Duke Christoph of Württemberg and widow of Count Georg Ernst von Henneberg. The marriage remained childless.

His second wife was on 17 May 1601 Zweibrücken Marie Elisabeth ( 1581-1637 ) daughter of Count Palatine Johann I von Zweibrücken, with whom he had the following children:
