George H. Heilmeier

George Harry salvation Meier ( May 22nd, 1936 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American electrical engineer and businessman who has contributed significantly to the development of liquid crystal displays.

Life

Healing Meier received his B. S. in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and his MSE, MA, and Ph.D. degrees in semiconductor technology and electronics at Princeton University.

1958 Healing Meier joined the RCA Laboratories in Princeton, New Jersey, where he worked on parametric amplifiers, tunnel diodes - down converters, millimeter-wave generators, ferroelectric thin-film devices, organic semiconductors and electro-optical effects of crystals and liquid crystals ( engl. Liquid Crystals ). In 1964 he discovered along with Williams several new electro-optical effects in liquid crystals, which led to the first liquid crystal displays based on dynamic he called the scattering mode ( DSM). In addition was also tested in his team of so-called guest-host effect with intercalated dye molecules.

In the 1970s, Meier healing was mainly working for the U.S. Department of Defense. 1970/71 he served as a White House Fellow and personal assistant to the defense minister, said he was planning long-term projects in the research area. In 1971 he was appointed Assistant Director for Defense Research and Engineering, Electronic and Physical Sciences, responsible for all research and development activities in the field of electronics and physics. In 1975 he became director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency ( DARPA ), and initiated there pioneering developments, especially in the stealth technology of space-based laser and infrared systems, as well as in the field of artificial intelligence.

In December 1977, Heil Meier left the Defense Department to become vice president of Texas Instruments, 1983, he was promoted to CTO. From 1991 to 1996 he was President and CEO of Bellcore (now Telcordia Technologies) and accompanied ultimately selling to Science Applications International Corporation ( SAIC). He was Chairman and CEO of the company from 1996 until 1997.

Healing Meier has received a variety of honors, he holds 15 patents and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the Defense Science Board and the National Security Agency Advisory Board. He is on the Advisory Board of Fidelity Investments and Teletech Holdings, and the Advisory Board of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania.
