George H. Utter

George Herbert Utter ( born July 24, 1854 in Plainfield, New Jersey; † November 3, 1912 in Westerly, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician and 1905-1907 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland. Since 1911 he represented his state in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and political rise

Already in 1861 came George Utter with his parents to Westerly in Rhode Iceland. There he attended the public schools and then to 1877 Amherst College in Massachusetts. After leaving school he went into the printing business of his father and the newspaper business. In 1893 he founded the weekly newspaper " Westerly Sun".

Utter was a member of the Republican Party. Between 1883 and 1885 he was a member of the advisory board of Governor Augustus O. Bourn. From 1885 to 1889 he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland, where he was president of the House since 1887. After that he belonged 1889-1891 to the State Senate; 1891 to 1894 he was managing as Secretary of State official of the Government of Rhode Iceland. In 1903, Utter was elected vice- governor of his state.

Governor and congressman

In the gubernatorial election of 1904 George Utter came out as the candidate of his party against the incumbent Lucius Garvin. After a re-election, he held this office between January 1905 and January 1, 1907 3. He introduced the custom, after the vice governor took the same time in the state Senate in the chair. Otherwise, his term was uneventful. After an electoral defeat in 1906, he had to hand over his office to James H. Higgins. Then he returned to the newspaper business.

In the congressional elections of 1910, Utter was in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. This mandate he stepped on 4 March 1911. He died during the campaign for his re- election in November 1912., With his wife Elizabeth L. Brown, he had four children.
