George Haig, 2nd Earl Haig

George Alexander Eugene Douglas Haig, 2nd Earl Haig, OBE, RSA ( born March 15, 1918 † 9 July 2009) was a British peer and politician.

Life and career

Haig was the only son of the British Field Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig. He attended Stowe School and studied at Christ Church College, University of Oxford. In January 1928 at the age of nine, he inherited the title from his father. His hitherto guided names Viscount Dawick he retained insofar as it was called in the family and by his friends Dawyck Haig.

During World War II he served with the Royal Scots Greys and was interned for some time as a POW in Colditz Castle. He attained the rank of captain. After the war he worked for charities for veterans and was from 1962 to 1965 chairman of the British Legion in Scotland.

In 1977 he was admitted to the Order of Saint John.

From 1956 until the divorce in 1981 Haig was married to Adrienne Thérèse Morley. In his second marriage he was married to Donna Lopez y Royo di Taurisano Geroloma since 24 March 1981. He had three children from his first marriage, namely:

  • Lady Adrienne Raina Haig,
  • Lady Elizabeth Therese Vivienne Haig,
  • Alexander Haig, 3rd Earl Haig.

Haig wrote his autobiography under the title My Father's Son, which was released in 2000. He was a well-known landscape painter and member of the Royal Scottish Academy.
