George Hainsworth

George Hainsworth (born 26 June 1895 in Toronto, Ontario, † October 9, 1950 ) was a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played from 1926 to 1937 for the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League.

Career

He began his career in Berlin, later Kitchener. In 1923, he as a professional to the Saskatoon Crescents in the Western Canada Hockey League.

On the recommendation of Newsy Lalonde, the Canadiens were interested in him and on 23 August 1926 he signed a contract there. Making its debut in the NHL Hainsworth was already 31 years old. The little man filled with the Canadiens the gap that Georges Vezina had left. In his first three years he won the Vezina Trophy, but was often in the shadow of the other goalkeepers of his time. This was due to his unspectacular play. Where other goalkeeper Charlie Gardiner excelled with parades George was just in the right place and seemed to effortlessly fight off the shots. This way, he was more of a spoilsport, while others have advanced to audience favorites. In the 1928/29 season he spoiled his opponents the game, as he allowed no goals from 44 games in 22. To date, it has brought more than 15 shutouts no other goalkeeper, although almost twice as many games played per season. 1930 and 1931, he twice won the Stanley Cup. In exchange for Lorne Chabot, he moved in 1933 to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Again, he was a master of his craft. As one of the season 1936/37, decided on the young Turk Broda put he returned once for four games with the Montreal Canadiens before he ended his active career.

In 1961 he was honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
