George Herbert

George Herbert (* April 3, 1593 at Montgomery Castle, † March 1, 1633 in Bemerton, Wiltshire ) was an English writer. He is next to John Donne and Andrew Marvell as one of the most important " Metaphysical Poets ".

Life

George Herbert was born into a wealthy, educated family. His father died when Herbert was three years old. His mother was a friend of John Donne. His brother was the poet and philosopher Edward Herbert. He had eight other siblings. Little is known about the childhood and youth Herberts. He studied at the University of Cambridge theology and philosophy, and was named after the successful completion of this study to the Public Orator of the University of Cambridge. 1630 he was ordained a priest. In his literary work Herbert devoted almost exclusively religious subjects, which he edited not by an abstract or theological, but from a very personal point of view. At the age of nearly 40 years, George Herbert died on March 1, 1633 in Bemerton, Wiltshire tuberculosis.

Reception in popular culture

The Herbert attributed motto "Living well is the best revenge" is the title of an album by the U.S. band Midtown and was developed by the American band REM taken as the title of a song from their album Accelerate.
