George II of Georgia

Giorgi II (Georgian გიორგი II, * 1050, † 1112 ) was King of Georgia from 1072 to 1089 He is the son of Bagrat IV.

Within a year of his reign there was a conspiracy of high feudal nobility against the king, but that could be crushed by royalist troops. However, now the Seljuk Sultan Malik Shah mixed (1072-1092) in the Feudalfehden. 1074 he attacked Georgia. But Giorgi was able to defeat and expel the Seljuks in Parzchisi.

1080 they fell again Georgia and destroyed several major Georgian cities like Samschwilde, Kutaisi and Artanuji. Many fortresses and monasteries fell victim to their onslaught. 1088 East Georgia Giorgi was forced to cede the capital Tbilisi to the Seljuk Turks and the Sultan to pay tribute. He only kept areas beyond the Lichi Mountains, ie Imereti and Abkhazia.

As in 1089, an earthquake devastated Georgia, saw the king as a sign from heaven and went to a monastery. The reign he left his 17- year-old son David IV, whom he had already appointed in 1085 as co-regent. But records show him still to 1112 as co-regent of his son.

The Seldschukenherrschaft over eastern Georgia lasted from 1080 to 1122 and went as the Great Turkish conquest in the Georgian history. It was not until 1122 with the conquest of Tbilisi by Giorgis son, David, Georgia was completely freed from the Seldschukenherrschaft.
