George J. Bates

George Joseph Bates ( born February 25, 1891 in Salem, Massachusetts, † November 1, 1949 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1937 and 1949 he represented the state of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

George Bates attended the public schools of his home. Later he hit as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. Between 1918 and 1924 he was a member of the House of Representatives of Massachusetts; 1924 to 1937 he held the office of the mayor of Salem.

In the congressional elections of 1936, Bates was selected in the sixth electoral district of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of Abram Andrew on January 3, 1937. After six re- elections he could remain until his death on November 1, 1949 in Congress. By 1941, there still more New Deal legislation of the Federal Government were adopted under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Since 1941 the work of the Congress of the events of the Second World War and its aftermath was marked. George Bates died in the crash of Eastern Air Lines flight 537 on the Washington National Airport. His deputy's mandate was made after a special election to his son William.
