George J. Hatfield

George J. Hatfield ( born October 29, 1887 in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, † November 15, 1953 in Palo Alto, California ) was an American politician. Between 1935 and 1939 he was Deputy Governor of the State of California.

Career

George Hatfield was born to American parents in Canada. After studying law and qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. He lived at least temporarily in San Francisco and participated as a soldier in the First World War. Politically, he joined the Republican Party. Between 1922 and 1936 he was a member of the State Board of California. From 1925 to 1933 he was United States Attorney for the Northern District of California.

1934 Hatfield was elected to the side of Frank Merriam to the Lieutenant Governor of California. This post he held 1935-1939. Yet he was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. After the end of his time as Lieutenant Governor George Hatfield remained attached to the policy. Since 1943 he was a member of the Senate of California. In year of his death he was considered a likely candidate for the office of Senate Chairman ( President Pro Tempore ). Hatfield was also a member of several organizations and associations. He died on November 15, 1953 in Palo Alto.
