George Kalmus

George Ernest Kalmus (* April 21, 1935 in Prague ) is a British experimental particle physicists.

Life

Kalmus came with his parents (his father Hans Kalmus was later professor of biology at University College London ( UCL) ) to England in 1939. He grew up in Harpenden and studied at UCL, where he was a visiting professor from 1984 to 2000 and from 1998 Fellow. 1959 to 1962 he conducted research at UCL in the bubble chamber group. From 1962 he worked at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley ( interrupted 1963/64, as a lecturer at UCL ), where he was from 1967 to 1971 Senior Physicist. After that, he was at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, where he was group leader for the bubble chamber and the participation in the Delphi collaboration ( at LEP at CERN ). From 1986 to 1994 he was deputy director from 1994 to 1997 and Director of particle physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. 1998 to 2000 he was there and from 2000 Honorary Senior Physicists Physicists. From 1984 he was a visiting scientist at UCL.

His brother Peter Kalmus is also a noted particle physicist, professor at Queen Mary College, London University and was the 1988 Rutherford Medal was awarded.

Memberships, Awards

He was in the Scientific Policy Committee at CERN and in the planning group of the International Linear Collider.

In 1988 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 2000 he was CBE.

In 2002 he was awarded the Glazebrook Medal.
