George Kell

George Clyde Kell ( born August 23, 1922 in Swifton, Arizona, † March 24, 2009 in Swifton, Arizona, Arkansas) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball.

Biography

George Kell began his career as a third baseman for the Philadelphia Athletics in the American League on 28 September 1943. 1946 he moved to the Detroit Tigers. In 1949 he won his only title for the player with the highest batting average with .3429 before Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox, who came to .3428. This very scarce success - usually the batting average is calculated only up to three digits after the decimal point - he also prevented Williams on winning the Triple Crown. A year later, he led the American League with 218 hits and 56 doubles, broke in batting average with .340 but only to second place behind Billy Goodman of the Boston Red Sox. In 1952, he joined the Red Sox. Of these, he joined the Chicago White Sox before the September 14, 1957 played his last game in the Major Leagues with the Baltimore Orioles.
