George Leonard (Congressman)

George Leonard ( born July 4, 1729 Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts, † July 26, 1819 in Raynham, Massachusetts ) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1789 and 1797 he represented two times the state of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

George Leonard grew up during the British colonial period. He graduated from Harvard College in 1748 and then worked as a notary (Register of Probate ) at the estate agency. After studying law and his 1750 was admitted to the bar he began to work in Norton in this profession. In the years 1764-1766 he was a deputy to the Provincial Assembly of Massachusetts. From 1770 to 1775 he served as a government advisor ( Executive Councilor ). About Leonards role during the American Revolution, nothing is handed down. Later, he was initially 1784-1790 restructuring judge and then to 1798, appeal judges. From 1798 to 1804 he served as chief judge in Massachusetts. In the congressional elections of 1789 Leonard was chosen in the seventh election district of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he took up his new mandate on March 4, 1789. In the years 1792 and 1793 Leonard sat in the Massachusetts Senate. In the elections of 1794 Leonard was chosen in the seventh district of his state again in Congress, where he became the successor of Theodore Sedgwick on March 4, 1795. He died on July 26, 1819 in Raynham at the age of 90 years.
