George Luks

George Benjamin Luks ( born August 13, 1867 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, † October 29, 1933 in New York City ) was an American portrait and genre painter. He was a member of the Ashcan School.

Life

Luks was the son of Central European immigrants. His father was a doctor, his mother a hobby painter and musician.

After a trip to Europe, during which he studied 1888/89 at the Art Academy Dusseldorf Heinrich Lauenstein, 1894, he returned back to the United States and was an illustrator for the Philadelphia Press. At this time he became acquainted with John Sloan, Robert Henri, William Glackens, and Everett Shinn.

In 1896 he moved to New York. He was a member of the artist group founded in 1908 The Eight and took part in the 1913 Armory Show. Luks taught for many years at the Art Students League of New York. Among his most famous pupils Norman Räben heard.

Reception

  • During World War II, a Liberty cargo ship was named after him.
