George M. Thomas

George Morgan Thomas (* November 23, 1828 in Poplar Flat, Lewis County, Kentucky; † January 7, 1914 in Vanceburg, Kentucky ) was an American politician. Between 1887 and 1889 he represented the state of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

George Thomas attended the common schools and taught himself after two years as a teacher. Between 1850 and 1859 he was a school commissioner. After studying law and his 1851 was admitted to the bar he began to work in this profession. From 1854 to 1858 he, alongside his work in the teaching profession and the public prosecutor in Lewis County. From 1862 to 1868, he served as a prosecutor in the Tenth Judicial District of Kentucky. In 1868 he was District Judge. This post he held in the years 1874 to 1880 again in the 14th Judicial District. From 1881 to 1885 he was attorney general for Kentucky.

Politically, Thomas member of the Republican Party. Between 1859 and 1863 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Kentucky. In 1871 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of lieutenant governor of his state. In the years 1872 and 1873 he was again a deputy in the State Parliament. In June 1884 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago, was nominated for the James G. Blaine as their presidential candidate.

In the congressional elections of 1886, Thomas was in the ninth electoral district of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of William H. Wadsworth on March 4, 1887. Until March 3, 1889, he completed a term in Congress. He then worked 1897-1901 as a lawyer for the federal tax authority. Then he withdrew into retirement. George Thomas died on January 7, 1914 in Vanceburg.
