George Montgomery (actor)

George Montgomery (actually George Montgomery Letz; born August 29, 1916 in Brady, Montana, † December 12, 2000 in Rancho Mirage, California ) was an American film actor.

Life

Montgomery was born as the youngest son of Ukrainian immigrants in Montana. The later Western performer has 14 siblings and grew up on a large ranch where he learned to play the ride as a child. After school, he studied interior architecture. He remained at the University of Montana, however, only a year and went to Hollywood to break into the film business. First he received from 1935 jobs as a stuntman and minor roles in low-budget westerns. The interior decorator career he remained a lifelong and designed homes for numerous Hollywood stars. By 1940, he appeared as George Letz. After signing a contract at 20th Century Fox he called himself George Montgomery. His film career went uphill since that time, but was interrupted by his entry into the Second World War in 1943. In the same year he married the popular entertainer Dinah Shore, with the to 1962 was married and had two children. Montgomery came in 1963 in the headlines when his housekeeper tried to kill him.

In addition to film work, Montgomery was a talented sculptor who created sculptures of his colleagues. Thus arose sculptures by Gene Autry, Clint Eastwood, Ronald Reagan and Randolph Scott. His sculpture by Dinah Shore and their children can be seen on the grounds of the golf course, Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, where each year the Dinah Shore golf tournament will be held.
