George Nugent-Temple-Grenville, 1st Marquess of Buckingham

George Nugent -Temple - Grenville, 1st Marquess of Buckingham KG (* June 17, 1753 in London, † February 11, 1813 ) was a British nobleman and politician.

Family

George was born in a politically active and prominent family. He was the son of the future British Prime Minister George Grenville and his wife Elizabeth Wyndham, a daughter of the Tory politician William Wyndham. His brother William Wyndham Grenville became Prime Minister in 1806 also. Another brother, Thomas Grenville was First Lord of the Admiralty. His aunt Hester Grenville was the wife of William Pitt the Elder, and thus he was a cousin of William Pitt the Younger. His uncle Richard Grenville, was Secretary of the Navy and Lord Privy Seal ). George followed this up in 1779 as 3rd Earl Temple.

George married in 1775 in London Mary Elizabeth Nugent, Baroness Nugent of Carlanstown († 1812), daughter and heiress of Robert Craggs Nugent, 1st Earl Nugent. With royal license he changed his name in 1779 in Nugent -Temple - Grenville. With his wife he had the following children:

  • Mary Anne (1787-1845), James Everard Arundell ∞ 1811, 10th Baron Arundell of Wardour
  • George (1789-1850), 2nd Baron Nugent of Carlanstown, ∞ 1813 Anne Lucy Poulett

Stowe Manuscripts Collection

The Stowe Missal was named after the Stowe Manuscripts Collection, which had been founded by him in Stowe House. In 1883 this collection was purchased by the state and handed over to the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin (Catalog MS II D 3).

Career

After completing his studies at Oxford University from 1774 to 1779 Grenville represented as a Whig MP the district Buckinghamshire in the House of Commons until he inherited the title of Earl Temple after the death of his uncle in 1779. From 1782 to 1812 was Nugent -Temple - Grenville, Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire from 1782 to 1783 and from 1787 to 1789 and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He was the first Grand Master of the Order of St. Patrick and 1783 for four days (December 19 to December 23 ) Secretary of State. In 1782 he became a member of the Privy Council and included in the Order of the Garter in 1786.

In 1784, Nugent -Temple - Grenville was raised to the 1st Marquess of Buckingham in 1788 and followed his father as Earl Nugent. He died 59 years old and is in Wotton, Buckinghamshire, buried.
