George P. McLean

George Payne McLean ( born October 7, 1857 in Simsbury, Hartford County, Connecticut, † June 6, 1932 ) was an American politician, Governor, and U.S. Senator of the State of Connecticut. He was a member of the Republican Party.

Early years and political rise

George McLean graduated in 1877 at the Hartford High School, then studied law and then got his license to practice law. Following McLean opened his own law practice in Hartford. He decided to pursue a political career. He ran in 1883 for a seat in the House of Representatives from Connecticut, where he remained following his successful election to 1885. He also worked 1884-1901 as a clerk in the state Pardon and Parole Board ( State Board of Pardons ). He was also from 1889 to 1891 Member of the Senate of Connecticut, and from 1892 to 1896 Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

Governor of Connecticut

McLean won the 1900 Governor Republican nomination and was elected governor of Connecticut a short time later. During his tenure, the administrative staff of the governor, and Connecticut militia was reorganized. Furthermore, a tax office authority was established. McLean decided due to his poor health not for re-election to compete and left office on January 7, 1903.

Another career

After his recovery, McLean 1911 was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he remained until 1929.

George P. McLean passed away on June 6, 1932 and was buried in Simsbury. He was married twice, once with Leah Demarest and Isabella McClintock. From the compounds four children.
