George Pachymeres

Georgios Pachymeres (* 1242 in Nicaea, † 1310 in Constantine Opel ) (Greek: Γεώργιος Παχυμέρης ) was a Byzantine scholar, poet and writer.

Life

After the fall of Constantinople in 1204 Pachymeres father fled ' to Bithynia, where his son was growing up. Georgios Pachymeres moved in 1261 to Constantinople, Opel and received the ordination to the priesthood. Pachymeres where he studied law. He taught at the University of the Hagia Sophia. Despite his opposition to the union of the Catholic and Orthodox Church, he retained a certain neutrality in his writings, which dealt with the dispute between Michael VIII and Andronikos II.

An equally important compendium was a compilation of thirteen books ( Syngraphikai Historiai ), all of which are Byzantine history treated and regarded as a continuation of Georgios Akropolites.

He was also active in other areas of science: he created a collection of the writings of Aristotle and brought out manuals on astronomy, mathematics and music.
