George Peele

George Peele (* 1556 in London, † 1596) was an English playwright.

Life

George Peele was christened on 25 July 1556. His father, who seems to come from a family of Devonshire, was an accountant at Christ 's Hospital and wrote two treatises on bookkeeping. He began his studies in 1571 at Pembroke College, Oxford. 1574 he moved to Christchurch College, where in 1577 he received his BA 1579 and his M. A. took off. Around 1580 he moved to London.

He left five plays and " The Turkish Mahomet and Hyron, the fair Greek ," which was never published and was lost, along with some occasional poems.

His works were by Alexander Dyce ( Lond. (1828, 1829-1839 and 1861 3 vols ), Morley (1887 ) AH Bullen ( 2 vols, published 1888).
