George Pullicino

George Pullicino ( born February 17, 1964 in Sliema) is a Maltese politician of the Nationalist Party and Prime Minister.

Biography

Pullicino studied post-school architecture at the University of Malta, where he specialized in particular urban planning. Most recently, he was until 1996 Chief Executive of the Malta Council for Science and Technology.

In 1980 he began his political career with election as a member of the Executive Committee of the Maltese Christian Democrat Students Movement ( Studenti demo Krist Jani Maltin ), which has close ties to the Nationalist Party (PN). In the following years, he held various positions before he was President of the SDM 1984-1987. He was first elected in 1987 to the Secretary General of the youth movement of the Nationalist Party ( Moviment Zgħazagħ Partit Nazzjonalista ) Subsequently, he became its president in 1990. In this role he was also representative for international Christian Democrat youth movements and others 1990-1992 Member of the Executive Board of the Youth of the European People's party ( Youth of the European People's Party ). During this time he was responsible in the Executive Board for the environmental policy and relations with non- EU countries.

In 1992, he competed as the candidate of Partit Nazzjonalista unsuccessfully for election as Members of the House of Representatives. In the 1996 election Pullicino was first elected a deputy of the House of Representatives, where he represented the constituency 10. In the parliamentary elections of 1998, 2003 and 2008, he was re-elected as an MP in each case.

After the election victory of the Nationalist Party in September 1998 he was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Interior and Environment, Tonio Borg.

After re- election victory of the PN, he was appointed on 15 April 2003 to the Minister for Agriculture and the Environment in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Edward Fenech Adami. A position he took over after the inauguration of Fenech Adami's successor Lawrence Gonzi on 23 March 2004, retaining this until today. His ministry includes not only the agriculture and fisheries sector, rural development and urban planning, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority ( MEPA ), but since March 2004 also by the strategic management of waste disposal on the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino. As Environment Minister he is in this case, after an initial release of the bird hunt for fierce criticism from animal rights activists for the ban on bird hunting and bird conservation in.
