George R. Davis

George Royal Davis ( born January 3, 1840 in Palmer, Hampden County, Massachusetts, † November 25, 1899 in Chicago, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1879 and 1885 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

George Davis attended until 1860 the Williston Seminary in East Hampton. He then studied law. During the Civil War he served 1862-1865, first as captain and then as a Major in the army of the Union. After the war he worked in the craft and in the insurance industry. He was also active in the financial market. He was also a colonel in the state militia of Illinois. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1878 Davis was in the second electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Carter Harrison on March 4, 1879. After two re- election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1885 three legislative periods. Since 1883 he represented there as a successor to Charles B. Farwell the third district of his state. In 1884 he gave up another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives George Davis took his previous activities on again. Between 1886 and 1890 he was treasurer in Cook County. When held in Chicago in 1893 World's Columbian Exposition Davis served as Director General for the implementation of this world exhibition. He died on November 25, 1899 in Chicago.
