George R. Dennis

George Robertson Dennis ( born April 8, 1822 in Whitehaven, Somerset County, Maryland; † August 13, 1882 in Kingston, Maryland ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party. He represented the state of Maryland 1873-1879 in the U.S. Senate.

George R. Dennis graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy (New York). He then attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. After graduating in 1843, he began practicing as a doctor in Kingston in Somerset County. Later he worked in agriculture.

Politically active Dennis was the first time in 1854 as a member of the Senate of Maryland; in 1871 he was a member of this Parliament chamber at another time. In 1867 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Maryland. Finally, he was elected in 1872 as a successor to George Vickers in the U.S. Senate in Washington. There he spent a full term of office of 4 March 1873 to 3 March 1879 before he returned to Maryland.
