George R. Stewart

George Rippey Stewart ( born May 31, 1895 in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, † 22 August 1980) was an American writer, linguist and professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley.

Life

George R. Stewart was born on May 31, 1895, the son of the railway engineer George Rippey Stewart and his wife Ella Wilson. He studied at Princeton University, the University of California, Berkeley and Columbia University. 1923 Stewart became a professor of English at UC, Berkeley.

Stewart was married to the daughter of the president of the University of Michigan, Theodosia Burton.

Writer

George R. Stewart became known in Germany by the science fiction novel life without end ( Earth Abides ), which has now been translated into 27 languages. This later inspired Stephen King 's novel The Stand - The Stand.
