George Șerban

George Şerban ( born June 25, 1954 in Buzau, Romania, † 31 December 1998 in Timişoara, Romania) was a Romanian journalist, politician and writer, best known as the author of the Proclamation of Timişoara in the wake of the Romanian Revolution of 1989.

Life

George Şerban studied sociology and psychology at the University Alexandru Ioan Cuza Iasi. Prior to 1989, he taught Marxism at the Polytechnic University of Timişoara. After his participation in the revolution, he was a member of the Society Timişoara and worked as a journalist for the newspaper Timişoara.

Şerban authored with other leading participants in the revolution, the Proclamation of Timişoara, a document with thirteen points. Şerban was in turn inspired by his assistant Alexandra Indries, an influential intellectuals and former political prisoners in the 1950s. The signatories from the ranks of society Timişoara (Romanian Societatea Timişoara) and other organizations of students and workers brought herein, the liberal- democratic objectives of the spirit of the revolution expressed. The proclamation was read on 11 March 1990 by the balcony of the Opera House Timisoara Piata Victoriei on by Şerban.

In 1994, Şerban of the Christian Democratic National Peasant Party at (Romanian Partidul Naţional Ţărănesc Crestin Democrat ) and was later elected to the Romanian Chamber of Deputies for Timiş county, where he remained until his death. He was a member of the Writers 'Union Uniunea Scriitorilor din România ( German: Romanian Writers' Union ) and of the Romanian PEN Club.
