George Sperling

George Sperling ( born 1934 ) is an American psychologist. He is Professor of Cognitive Science and Neurobiology & Behavior at the University of California, Irvine.

In 1955 he received his Bachelor of Science at the University of Michigan. In 1956 he received the MA in psychology from Columbia University. At Harvard University, he received his Ph.D. and has been dealing with the cognitive psychology.

Research

He is best known for his investigations of the iconic memory ( 1960). Together with the echoic memory it forms the sensory memory.

The subjects were presented one 3x3 character matrix for a very short time. Overall, there was about half to be reminded. The subjects have been asked by a signal to focus on a particular line, the task could be solved perfectly.
