George Telek

George Telek Mamua, MBE ( born 1959 in Raluana on the island of New Britain ) is a singer from Papua New Guinea.

George Telek belongs to the indigenous people of the Tolai and is one of the most famous artists of Melanesia; he sings in his native language Kuanua and in the creole Tok Pisin. Many of his songs contain three-part harmonies of the music of the Tolai.

Biography

George Telek began his career in the 1970s as a singer in bands of his native village Raluana near Rabaul on the island of New Britain ( New Britain, formerly New Britain ). In the late 1970s he was with the Molachs revival band founded by him so popular that it has been invited to perform in the capital Port Moresby. In the 1980s, he celebrated with the band Painim wok great success outside of New Guinea.

His debut album, Telek won in 1997 in Australia the price " ARIA Music Awards " in the Best World Music Album category.

After recording his second solo album Serious Tam in England in the studios of Peter Gabriel, he toured various countries in Europe and the United States, where he appeared in Seattle at a WOMAD Festival in front of about 20,000 listeners.

George Telek is married and the father of seven children.
