George Vasiliou

George Vassiliou ( Γιώργος Βασιλείου Giorgos Vasiliou, born May 20, 1931) is a Greek- Cypriot politician and served as 1988-1993 President of the Republic of Cyprus.

In February 1988, the non-party Vassiliou was elected with nearly 52 percent of the new president on the second ballot. His opponent and later successor Glafcos Clerides, who competed for the conservative- democratic parties, received 48 percent. The predecessor and old incumbent Spyros Kyprianou could not qualify for the ballot in the first round with 27 percent.

In 1993, the Liberal Party Vassiliou Enomeni Dimokrates (United Democrats ), which he chaired until 2005.

He is married with EU Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou and the couple have three children.
