George W. Emery

George W. Emery (* 1830 in Penobscot, Hancock County, Maine, † 1909 in Marshfield, Massachusetts ) was an American politician ( Republican).

Emery graduated from Dartmouth College and then studied law in Albany, New York. After that he worked as a tax collector in the U.S. South, to President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him in June 1875 governor of the Utah territory. Despite the bitter Mormon Gentiles feud in the late 19th century Emery brought the electoral reforms to end and extended the government apparatus for a rapidly growing population. When President Grant in October 1875 visited Utah, he was amazed at the friendly staff there and he reportedly told Emery that he had been deceived with regard to the Mormons. In February 1880, the Legislature named after his term ends, a new county, which was located in the middle of Utah, according to him, the Emery County.
