George W. Fithian

George Washington Fithian (* July 4, 1854 in Willow Hill, Jasper County, Illinois, † January 21, 1921 in Memphis, Tennessee ) was an American politician. Between 1889 and 1895 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

George Fithian attended the public schools of his home. After he graduated from Mount Carmel an apprenticeship in the printing trade. After a subsequent law degree in 1875 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he began to work in Newton in this profession. Between 1876 and 1884 he was a prosecutor in Jasper County. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career.

In the congressional elections of 1888 Fithian was in the 16th electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Silas Z. Landes on March 4, 1889. After two re- election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1895 three legislative periods. Since 1893 he was chairman of the Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries. In 1894 he was not re-elected.

Between 1895 and 1897 was George Fithian railroad and warehouse commissioner ( Railroad and warehouse commissioner ) of the State of Illinois. He also practiced as a lawyer again. He was also active in agriculture and especially in the field of animal husbandry. In the near Falcon, Mississippi, he had a large cotton plantation. He died on January 21, 1921 in Memphis, and was buried in Newton.
