George Wallace Tunnel

The George Wallace Tunnel is a tunnel in Mobile, Alabama, and crosses the Mobile River. In the two tunnels, two lanes of Interstate 10 run

The segments of the tunnel were - as well as the smaller of the Bankhead Tunnel - 1969-1973 some road blocks upstream on the shipyard of the Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Company ( ADDSCO ) built.

The individual tunnel segments were then brought to the site, flooded to the final point and connected to each other under water. Later they were again drained and completed the interior design.

Tunnel portals

On the western side of the George C. Wallace Tunnel occurs just as the Bankhead Tunnel under the Royal Street in downtown Mobile to the surface; in contrast to the older building, which opens at the same level in the Government Street, the George C. Wallace Tunnel leading up to a built on piers high road, on the Interstate 10 crosses the streets of Mobile time.

At its eastern end on Blakeley Iceland, the tunnel also leads via a ramp to the top where it is connected to the bridge on which the I-10 via the Mobile Bay eastward.

Fort Condé

During the construction of the tunnel and some other new buildings were discovered at the building the foundations of the broken in the 19th century Fort Conde, extending from the river a few blocks farther along Water Street and Commerce Street. After the pits were filled to the tunnels again, we built a replica of the earlier fortress.
