George Washington Emery Dorsey

George Washington Emery Dorsey ( born January 25, 1842 Loudoun County, Virginia; † June 12, 1911 in Salt Lake City, Utah ) was an American politician. Between 1885 and 1891 he represented the third electoral district of the state of Nebraska in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1856, George Dorsey moved with his parents in the Preston County in present-day West Virginia, which was then still part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. He attended private schools and the Oak Hill Academy. During the Civil War he fought as a lieutenant of an infantry unit from West Virginia in the ranks of the Union army. During the war he rose to the Major. 1866 Dorsey moved to Nebraska, where he studied law. After his 1869 was admitted as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he went into the banking business.

Dorsey was a member of the Republican Party. He was vice-president of the Agriculture Committee of Nebraska and chairman of the Republican on Staatssebene. In the congressional elections of 1884, he was elected in the third district of Nebraska in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he replaced Edward K. Valentine on March 4, 1885. After two re- elections he could implement his mandate in Congress until March 3, 1891. He was from 1889 to 1891 Chairman of the Banking and Währungsauschusses.

After he was not re-elected in 1890, to Dorsey withdrew from politics. He devoted himself to his private business, to which by now included some mining companies in Nevada and Utah. George Dorsey died in June 1911 in Salt Lake City and was buried in Fremont (Nebraska ).
