George Washington Masonic National Memorial

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a monumental Masonic Temple, built in memory of George Washington, the first President of the United States and practicing Freemason.

Construction began in 1922 and ended in 1932. It is located in Alexandria (Virginia), on the top of Shuter 's Hill and opened a panorama of Alexandria and Washington DC., The ten-storey tower is modeled after the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria. The nearest subway station is King Street, and the Amtrak station is close.

The building

The memorial was funded solely of cash and donations. The plan was for the New York architectural firm Helmle & Corbett. The neo-classical building is required at the entrance to the strict Doric columns order, the three subdivisions of the tower are ornamented in the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian style.
