The Clara Barton Parkway belongs administratively to the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Until 1989, he also introduced the name Washington Memorial Parkway, but was then renamed to end the confusion of road users.

The eastern end of the Clara Barton Parkway is in the District of Columbia, where the Canal Road passes to the Chain Bridge in the Parkway. The western end is just past the Capital Beltway in Montgomery County, where it flows into the MacArthur Boulevard. The Parkway is the access road to Glen Echo Park and Clara Barton National Historic Site in Glen Echo (Maryland). The Capital Beltway can be reached in a southerly direction of travel on the motorway junction at the American Legion Bridge and north across the Cabin John Parkway.

Earlier plans

It was originally planned that the Parkways should be connected on both sides of the river on a bridge over the Great Falls of the Potomac River. The protests of conservationists ensured that the construction of the bridge has been removed. Instead, traffic runs between the two parkways over the American Legion Bridge.

Administrative history

The Parkway was approved on May 29, 1930 and passed on August 10, 1933 by the " Office of Public Buildings and Public Parks of the National Capital ."
