George Washington Owen

Owen was born in 1796 in Brunswick County, Virginia. He moved with his parents to Tennessee, where he attended public schools and studied law at the University of Nashville. In 1816 he was admitted to the legal profession and practiced law in Claiborne, Alabama. 1821 failed his candidacy for a seat in the House of Representatives of the United States. Previously, he had been from 1819 to 1821 a member of the House of Representatives from Alabama and had in 1821 held the office of Speaker. At the next congressional election Owen won a seat and then took on 4 March 1823 to March 3, 1836 for the state of Alabama in the House of Representatives of the United States. 1836 Owen was elected mayor of Mobile. This office he held until his death. Owen was buried in the Old Church Street Cemetery in Mobile.
