George Whitman Hendee

George Whitman Hendee ( born November 30, 1832 in Stowe, Lamoille County, Vermont, † December 6, 1906 in Morrisville, Vermont ) was an American politician and in 1870 governor of the state of Vermont. Between 1873 and 1879 he represented his state in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and political rise

George Hendee attended the public schools in Morrisville and the People's Academy. After a subsequent law degree in 1855 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started in Morrisville to work in his new profession. In this city he was also for many years as School Board ( Superintendent of Schools ) operate. Business Hendee is also engaged in railroad and banking industry.

George Hendee was a member of the Republican Party. Between 1858 and 1859 he was district attorney in Lamoille County and from 1861 to 1862 he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from Vermont. During the American Civil War, he was deputy head of the military police in Vermont ( Deputy Provost Marshal ). Between 1866 and 1868 George Hendee was in the state Senate.

Governor and congressman

In 1869, Hendee was chosen as the candidate of his party for the new Lieutenant Governor of Vermont. In this capacity, he fell on February 7, 1870 after the death of Governor Peter T. Washburn whose term of office to. Up to 3 October 1870, he had so officiate as governor of his state. These months passed without special political events in Vermont. Hendee renounced own candidacy for the office of governor. Instead, he was elected in the elections of 1872 as a representative of his state in the U.S. Congress. After he was re-elected twice, he was able to exercise this mandate between 4 March 1873 to 3 March, 1879. For the elections of 1878 he was nominated but then no more.

After the end of his political career Hendee was working as a lawyer again. Between 1879 and 1885 he was auditor ( Examiner ) of the National Bank. He also devoted himself to the horse breeding. George Hendee died in December 1906. He was married twice.
