George William Allan

George William Allan ( born January 9, 1822 in York, † July 24, 1901 in Toronto ) was a Canadian politician of the 19th century.

Allan's father, William Allan was one of the pioneers who settled in the region of present-day Toronto. Already he was politically active and held a number of offices.

George William Allen attended Upper Canada College and did his military service in the Bank Rifle Corps. He then studied law. Before he finally settled with his first wife Louisa Maud Robinson in Toronto, he toured Europe and the Nile region, Syria and the territory of present-day Israel and Turkey. Due to his intense travels, he was elected to the Royal Geographical Society.

From 1849 to 1855 he was a member of the City Council of Toronto, before he was elected the 11th mayor of the city. In this period also saw its intensive promotion of Canadian painter Paul Kane. He then took advantage of a number of political offices in the Canadian Parliament. He took this a great influence on the development of a distinct Canadian culture. He took office in the Royal Canadian Society, the Ontario Society of Artists, the Toronto Conservatory of Music and the Ontario Historical Society.

He died on 24 July 1901 in Toronto.
