George William Howlan

George William Howlan ( born May 19, 1835 in Waterford, Ireland, † May 11 1911 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Iceland ) was a Canadian politician. From 1873 to 1894 he was a Canadian senator, then he served until 1899 as Vice- Governor of the Province of Prince Edward Iceland.

Biography

1839 emigrated from Howlan along with his parents. After completing his schooling, he worked as a salesman and commercial employee. Finally, he founded his own trading company in Alberton. In addition to its various business activities Howlan acted as vice-consul of the interests of Denmark, Norway and Sweden in the province of Prince Edward Iceland. In 1863 he was elected member of parliament of the former colony, from 1867 he was a member of the government. In 1873 he was a member of that delegation that negotiated the accession of Prince Edward Iceland to the Canadian Confederation in Ottawa.

In September 1873 Howlan ran for a seat in the Canadian House of Commons, but was defeated in short supply. A month later, however, he was appointed senator. He campaigned for the construction of a railway tunnel under the Northumberland Strait, Prince Edward Iceland should join with the mainland. In it, he saw an opportunity to promote the economic development of the province; However, the idea was soon forgotten. In February 1891, he wanted to be elected a second time in the House of Commons, but was again unsuccessful. Governor General Lord Aberdeen sworn Howlan on 21 February 1894 as the Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Iceland. This representative office he held until May 23, 1899.
