Georges Anglade

Georges Anglade ( born July 18, 1944 in Port-au -Prince, † January 12, 2010 ) was a Haitian- Canadian writer, geographer and politician.

Education and Career

After the completion of the general education school in 1962 Anglade studied in Port -au -Prince Jura, where he graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor in Law and a degree in social sciences. He then continued his studies in Strasbourg, where he received the 1969 Master in Applied Geography and parallel to 1967 a Licence en lettres. After teaching at the Institute of Demography - since 1968 - he went the following year to Montreal, where he became a founding member of the Université du Québec à Montréal ( UQAM ) and there also taught as a professor of geography up to 2002. In his scientific work, he dealt primarily with the development and democracy problems of his homeland, but also with Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Martinique or the Bahamas.

Georges Anglade has in his literary career as theoretically employs practically the genre of Lodyans, a genre of literature that is specific haitian and draws on the work of Justin Lhérisson.

The opposition against the Duvalier dictatorship in 1974, was imprisoned and exiled in the same year and then again in 1991. In Montreal, he founded the MAS ( Movement haïtien de solidarité, Haitian Solidarity movement) and published in 1990 the manifesto La chance qui passe. In 1994 he was adviser to the government of Aristide in 1995 and Minister of Public tasks and 1996 special adviser to the Préval government.

Anglade and his wife Mireille died in the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 under the rubble of his house. He left behind two grown daughters.
