Georges Bereta

Georges Bereta ( born May 15, 1946 in Saint- Étienne, France ) is a former French footballer.

Club career

The diminutive son of a Polish immigrant workers grew up near the Stade Geoffroy Guichard and joined already at the age of eleven AS Saint -Étienne. The winger has not been discovered for the big football but his club coaches, but it was his instructor in the "Footballer battalion " of Joinville, the Saint- Etienne's professional coach Jean Snella with the words "You have the best left winger in France, but you do not know that once " attention to Bereta made . The end of 1966 took into account Snella Georges Bereta the first time for a first division, which benefited from the fact that the Greens - as "Green" the players from Saint- Étienne are called to this day for their club colors - due to injury before the match against Lille were in personnel needs. The left-footer was strong in the tackle, quick and tricky; although he mainly hereingab flanks and templates for the inside forward, he also scored himself almost 60 point game hits, many of them from the penalty spot during his career.

Over the next eight and a half years he took to the ASSE an impressive number of national titles: he was five times champion of Division 1, including from 1967 to 1970 four title wins in a row, and three times National Cup winner. In the cup he was in all the finals on grass: 1968 2-1 against Girondins Bordeaux, 1970 5-0 over FC Nantes where he scored the second goal, and in 1974 in the 2-1 against AS Monaco, as he gave the Cup was presented with the newly elected President Giscard d' Estaing. Bereta also won three times the Doublé ( league and cup in the same season ) and the Supercup. Personally, he was soon called to the national team ( see below) and twice awarded as the French Player of the Year; only the Étoile d'Or as the best player in the season was denied. In the European club competitions, Saint-Étienne, however, came out only twice on the first round; this is one of the 3-0 win over Bayern Munich in the European Cup of Champions 1969/70 according to a first leg -0: 2 to the positive impressions Beretas.

Three coaches formed him and trusted him, until 1967 the Polish -born Jean Snella likewise, to 1972 Albert Batteux and then former team-mate Robert Herbin; also the list of Georges Beretas longtime teammates at the Verts reads like a "Who 's Who" of the French professional football. Already in the 1960s included Bosquier, goalkeeper Carnus, Jacquet, Keïta, Larqué, Lopez, Mekhloufi, Repellini, the brothers and Patrick Hervé Revelli, Santini and Sarramagna to this circle. In the early 1970s, among other Bathenay, goalkeeper Ćurković, Janvion, Larios, Piazza and Rocheteau pushed to do so.

From the start of the season back round 1974/75 was Georges Bereta surprisingly the white jersey of Olympique Marseille, though he had hitherto come in all 19 league games for Saint- Étienne used. Ironically, the " epitome of ASSE player ", for years and team captain, was the victim of financial difficulties of its old and big plans of his new club, whose president Roger Rocher and Fernand Méric agreed on the immediate 500,000 -FF - transfer, without the player have also questioned only for his opinion. A special piquancy was due to the fact that the ratio between these two clubs had extremely deteriorated since several previous solicitation of Verts by Olympique ( Carnus, Bosquier, Keïta ). Still standing at the end of the signatures of all three parties under the contracts, which Saint -Etienne President did not stop them, then down the country from an " intolerable scandal" to rant - which he only said its President colleagues. The restrained Bereta himself said later: ". , It would have only a word the part of the ASSE, and I would have remained " The wound that had struck this " dubious, sensational process ", it still ached decades later.

Through the change he not only missed the semi-finals in the European Champions Cup against Bayern Munich, but he had to after another 16 games in Division 1 for the runner - behind "his" ASSE - content. Saint- Étienne won the cup and thus a further Doublé where Bereta at least a " 50% interest " had. In the subsequent three years, his new club finished the season table only on the squares 9, 12 and 4 starting and did not survive even with its few European performances in the first round, failed as in the UEFA Cup 1975/76 with 0:1 and 0: 3 to Carl Zeiss Jena. One last title was Bereta but in Provence help but still mitgewinnen, as Marseille 1976 namesake from Lyon 2-0 in the cup final hit. In the summer of 1978 ended the striker, who had come in the last season only to two point stakes, his highly successful professional career.

Georges Bereta was between December 1967 and May 1975 44 times the blue jersey of the A- national team, scoring four goals. He debuted under coach Louis Dugauguez in a 3-1 win against Luxembourg and played himself right into the root formation; this remained well below the Dugauguez successors Georges Boulogne and Ştefan Kovács so, where he was set up in recent years often in midfield. Kovács appointed him in 1973 in addition to the team leader of the Bleus what this was during his last twelve games.

Bereta has played against the other teams from German-speaking countries, but never won: twice against West Germany (1968 and 1973 1:1 1:2 ), once each against Switzerland (1970, 1:2 ), Austria (1970, 0: 1) and the GDR (1974, 2-2 ). However, his Nationalelfkarriere fell right in the "dark days" of the Équipe Tricolore, in which France was able to qualify for a single major tournament and both in Europe (1968, 1972) as well as the World Cup finals (1970, 1974) had to watch. And as Michel Hidalgo took over the office of Sélectionneurs Kovács, Georges Bereta was no longer taken into account.
