Georges Claes

Georges Claes ( born January 7, 1920 in Boutersem, † March 14 1994 in Leuven ) was a Belgian racing cyclist.

Georges Claes was a professional cyclist from 1939 to 1953, with a brief interruption caused by war. In 1942 he was second in the Tour of Flanders and 1943 Belgian vice-champion on the road. His greatest successes were the victories in two consecutive years - 1947 and 1948 - at Paris- Roubaix. Otherwise, he presented himself quite successful especially in local criteria.

After Claes ' victory at Paris -Roubaix in 1947 Der Spiegel: " Georges Claes, a Belgian racing cyclist, the bicycle trip from Paris to Roubaix won. 50 km from the finish of the frame of his bicycle broke. An audience member asked him a ladies bike available, with which he could still save the victory. For the 246 km long distance he needed just six hours, 300 g of sugar and 7 bananas. "
